Vermont patients are required to pay a 6.00% sales tax on every purchase of medical marijuana. There is no additional excise tax on medical marijuana in Vermont.
Vermont consumers are required to pay a 6.00% sales tax on every purchase of marijuana for personal use. There is also an additional excise tax of 14% on every purchase of marijuana for personal use.
About Vermont Marijuana Tax
While food and beverages are generally exempt from Vermont's sales tax, changes were made to the definition of food and food ingredients in order to exclude cannabis products in order to allowing the state to charge the general sales tax on all purchases of marijuana and marijuana products.
There is a 14% excise tax on recreational marijuana payed by the purchaser at the time of the retail sale, which is separate from the general sales tax. This tax includes food or beverages made using marijuana. In order to make medication more affordable, Vermont chose to exclude the sale of medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary to a licensed patient from the excise tax. This excise tax is effective as of March 1, 2022.
