In addition to (or instead of) traditional sales taxes, cigarettes and other tobacco products are subject to excise taxes on both the Utah and Federal levels. Excise taxes on tobacco are implemented by every state, as are excises on alcohol and motor fuels like gasoline.

The tax on cigarettes is between 8.5 and 9.963 cents per cigarette (based upon cigarette weight). For all other tobacco products except moist snuff there is a 86% manufacturer's price and $1.83 tax per every ounce of moist snuff.
