How to get an Utah Sales and Use Tax License

In Utah, most businesses are required to have a sales tax permit. Who needs an Utah Sales and Use Tax License?

Utah requires all businesses to register with multiple state department, as well as localities. All businesses with a nexus in Utah are required to collect and remit the Utah sales tax, which requires applying for a Utah Sales and Use Tax License. Utah states that nexus occurs when business that engages in "regular solicitation of a consumer market in Utah" maintains any kind of facilities, stock of goods, salespeople or personnel within the state.

How to get an Utah Sales and Use Tax License:

You can apply online through the Utah OneStop Business Registration (OSBR) portal, and will instantly get a temporary sales tax permit. You can also register by mail with Form TC-69, although this will take longer. You will receive your sales tax liscense in the mail after your application is processed.

In some cases, you may be required to post a surety bond before your application is approved (mainly if you or your business partners have a history of paying taxes late).

The business entity type (Corporation; Limited Liability Company; Sole Proprietorship; etc.),
The proposed name of your business.,
Date the new business is going to start in Utah.,
Date of the first payroll in Utah.,
Names; addresses; phone numbers; FEIN's and SSN's or TIN's of proprietors; partners; corporate officers; LLC members and Registered Agent. Electronic signatures required.,
The business location(s).,
Brief description of the business activity.,
Name and telephone number of person submitting the registration.,
Forms of payment (Visa; MasterCard; electronic check).,
For Foreign Business Entities (Business entities located outside of Utah): You will need to provide a Certification of Good Standing/Existence from the State of Incorporation dated no earlier than ninety (90) days.
