New York Certification of Residential Use of Energy Purchases

A sales tax exemption certificate can be used by businesses (or in some cases, individuals) who are making purchases that are exempt from the New York sales tax. The State of New York does not apply sales and use tax on energy sources and services for residential purposes, which can save you 4% of the price of the energy source. In case of mixed property (i.e. where the premises are being used for both residential and non-residential and served by a single meter), you will only qualify for the exemption if at least 75% of the total area of the premises (excluding common areas) is being used for residential purposes. In case the percentage of the area being used for residential purposes is less than that, the exemption will apply only to the residential-use portion, rounded to the nearest 10%. Claiming the exemption is simple. Just fill out the form and give it to your supplier.
